Making Nashville Home

In Nashville’s New Americans, Sheri Sellmeyer profiles more than 30 first-generation immigrants from all over the world, describing the many ways they enrich the life and culture of the city. Sellmeyer will discuss the book at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville on April 11.

Miss Betty’s Week

Miss Betty’s column was never supposed to be funny. Still, every Christmas, after making the pilgrimage from Georgia to Water Valley, Mississippi, my sisters and I would read “Betty’s Week” aloud for guaranteed laughter. Scoring a copy of the North Mississippi Herald was a family tradition, right up there with perusing the staff picks at Square Books and snorfeling down pepper-flecked bacon at Big Bad Breakfast.

Crisis Management

In his memoir Hot Spot, Dr. Alex Jahangir recounts his experiences leading Nashville’s COVID-19 Task Force. Dr. Jahangir will appear at the 2022 Southern Festival of Books in Nashville on October 14-16.

A Demand for Justice

A rising star in the fight for racial justice, Nashvillian Justin Jones chronicles his activism in a new memoir, The People’s Plaza: Sixty-Two Days of Nonviolent Resistance. Jones will appear at Fisk University on August 11 and at the 2022 Southern Festival of Books in Nashville on October 14-16.

It’s Georgia law that sex offenders register with the state each year, but in Blue Ridge, the local paper also publishes current and former offenders, with their name, age, and photo. And there was Harold, with his big, bumpy nose and kind eyes.
