A Struggle Against Dull

Rick Bragg will kick off the Southern Lit Alliance’s Distinguished Lectures series at 5 p.m. tonight, January 21, 2016, with a reading from My Southern Journey. The event, which includes a general-admission reading and a benefit dinner, will be held at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center in Chattanooga. In today’s podcast, which was recorded on November 7, 2014, Bragg talks with Chapter 16’s Stephen Usery about his biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, why Southern storytellers are drawn to the Gothic, and how, for a writer, “everything is a struggle against dull.” It’s also probably your only chance to hear Rick Bragg sing a few lines from “I’m Walking the Floor Over You.”
