Chapter 16
A Community of Tennessee Writers, Readers & Passersby

Back Soon

Chapter 16 is on hiatus until July 29.

Chapter 16 is on hiatus for a few weeks to recharge and prepare for the always-hectic fall book season — including, of course, the Southern Festival of Books. We’ll pop in here on July 18 to share the lineup of festival authors, and we’ll return to our regular schedule of weekday posts on July 29.

As we take a short break at the site, we’d like to mention a few noteworthy books we’ve covered during the first half of 2024. Perhaps one or more of these will find its way to your summer TBR pile: Susannah Felts interviewed poet Crystal Wilkinson about her culinary memoir, Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghostss, and Sara Beth West reviewed the debut novel by Claire Jiménez, What Happened to Ruthy Ramirez. Betsy Phillips answered a few questions from Aram Goudsouzian about her book Dynamite Nashville, a no-holds-barred investigation into Nashville’s white supremacist violence during the civil rights era. Odie Lindsey delivered a lively and thoughtful review of Truckload of Art, Brendan Greaves’ biography of artist/musician Terry Allen. And in a review that’s both personal and deeply insightful, Ciona Rouse considered the new collection of poetry and prose by MacArthur Fellow J. Drew Lanham, Joy Is the Justice We Give Ourselves.

Whatever you choose to read, we wish you safe and happy summer days ahead. See you in a few weeks!
