Russell Rickford’s history of “Pan-African Nationalist” schools, We Are an African People, is the winner of the 2016 National Book award, given by the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis. Rickford will speak at the University of Memphis on October 19.
In The Road to Camelot, Thomas Oliphant and Curtis Wilkie tell the story of John F. Kennedy’s quest for the presidency, which started in 1956. Prior to their appearance at Novel in Memphis on October 16, Wilkie discussed the book with Chapter 16.
Two of Clyde Edgerton’s beloved early novels, Raney and The Floatplane Notebooks, have been reissued by the University of South Carolina Press in its Southern Revivals series. Edgerton will appear at the 2017 Southern Festival of Books in Nashville October 13-15.
“Peter was a prankster,” says Ann Beattie, who knew Peter Taylor as a reader and as a friend. Editor of the Library of America’s new edition of Taylor’s complete stories and author of The Accomplished Guest, a new story collection of her own, Beattie will appear at the 2017 Southern Festival of Books in Nashville October 13-15.
Australian author Markus Zusak, whose novel The Book Thief is the 2017 Memphis Reads selection, will speak at Christian Brothers University on September 11 at 7 p.m., and at Rhodes College on September 12 at 7 p.m. Both talks are free and open to the public.
In Democracy in Chains, Nancy MacLean narrates an intellectual history of free-market conservatism, with profound effects for today’s political situation. She will discuss the book at the 2017 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 13-15.
