April 10, 2013 Today, author Jill McCorkle talks about the title story from her 2009 collection, Going Away Shoes, which precedes the publication of her new novel, Life After Life—her first in seventeen years.
McCorkle’s title story, “Going Away Shoes,” raises a number of contemporary questions while still incorporating elements from beloved fairy tales, where myths and fatal flaws complicate the story’s present-day events. Through the main character, who resembles Cinderella, McCorkle contemplates the ways in which a woman can fulfill her responsibilities while still managing to make room for herself. McCorkle will read from and sign Life After Life at Parnassus Books in Nashville on April 16, at Burke’s Book Store in Memphis on April 17. Along with her former student Jamie Quatro, she will also present a panel at the Celebration of Southern Literature in Chattanooga on April 18. To read a review of McCorkle’s new novel, click here.
