The Black Scale

Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s debut story collection depicts black characters who fear their race marks them as undesirable, or worse. Adjei-Brenyah will discuss Friday Black at Parnassus Books in Nashville on November 6, and at Novel in Memphis on November 7.

The Descent of Man

The protagonists of Barbara Kingsolver’s Unsheltered are two families, separated by 140 years, who occupy a dilapidated house during parallel periods of cultural crisis. Kingsolver will discuss Unsheltered at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville on November 2. The event is part of the Salon@615 series.

Mastering the Arts

The young heroine of B.A. Shapiro’s latest novel, The Collector’s Apprentice , loves Post-Impressionism, but to achieve the life of her dreams she has to learn the lower arts of deception and subterfuge. Shapiro will appear at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

What’s Wrong with Me?

J.M. Holmes’s debut story collection, How Are You Going To Save Yourself, tracks four friends who form a posse in their teens but drift apart in their twenties. The book addresses twenty-first-century issues, particularly those facing young African-Americans, without sugar-coating. Holmes will appear at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

My Work is Done

Big Angel de la Cruz, protagonist of Luis Alberto Urrea’s The House of Broken Angels, is dying and hopes to make peace with his family before he dies. Urrea will appear at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

Right Ho, Penelope

The hero of Inman Majors’s new comic novel, Penelope Lemon: Game On!, is at a crossroads. Divorced and broke, she must use all her cunning and fortitude to start over—and maybe have some fun along the way. Majors will appear at Union Ave. Books in Knoxville on August 13, at Parnassus Books in Nashville on August 14, at Novel in Memphis on August 16, and at the Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.
