January 28, 2013 When a person takes a late lunch break and heads over to the local bookshop on a mid-week winter afternoon, she might expect to spend a quiet hour in the abandoned stacks.
At the most famous independent bookstore in America, however, it’s never very still, much less abandoned. If you’d stepped inside Nashville’s Parnassus Books on Wednesday, you’d have been joining a crew from Oprah Winfrey’s network, OWN, there to interview co-owners Karen Hayes and Ann Patchett. The much-interviewed pair were discussing the founding of the bookstore and their hopes for its future–and for the future of bookselling in America. Look for the show, a segment of “Super Soul Sunday,” on February 3.
