February 24, 2011 Screenwriter John Fusco is adapting Peter Guralnick’s 1994 biography, Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, for Fox 2000, reports Deadline New York. The project has been planned for more than a decade but is only just now getting off the ground.
Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley covers the years up to the King’s enlistment in the Army. In 1999, Gurlanick, who teaches creative writing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, followed that volume with Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley. Guralnick has also written a biography of Sam Cooke, as well as a celebrated trilogy about America’s roots music—Feel Like Goin’ Home: Portraits in Blues and Rock ’n’ Roll, Lost Highway: Journeys and Arrivals of American Musicians, and Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm & Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom—in addition to a novel and two short-story collections.
