In North Korea with the “Chosin Few”

Memphis native Hampton Sides, author of Hellhound on His Trail and In the Kingdom of Ice, will talk about On Desperate Ground, his account of the U.S. Marines at Chosin Reservoir, when he appears at Novel in Memphis on October 8 at 6 p.m.

Reconciled to Imperfection

True generosity of spirit informs the poems in Blas Falconer’s Forgive the Body This Failure. Falconer will appear at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville on October 9, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville on October 11, and at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

The Never-Ending Risk-Benefit Analysis

In March of 2011, Kim Brooks made a decision that upended her life: she left her four-year-old son buckled into his car seat while she ran into Target to make one quick purchase. The result of the fallout from that decision is Small Animals: Parenthood in the Age of Fear, which Brooks will discuss at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

Gods and Angels and Demons

In Book of the Just, Dana Chamblee Carpenter concludes her story of Mouse, the half-human 700-year-old daughter of Satan, and her fight to avenge a terrible loss and save her brother from their father’s diabolical schemes. Carpenter will appear at two Nashville events: at Parnassus Books on October 7 and at the Southern Festival of Books, held October 12-14.

How Close to Hell We’ll Have to Come

With righteous fury and scathing wit, Ben Fountain’s Beautiful Country Burn Again dissects the monster of American politics in the age of Donald Trump, providing what may stand as the definitive account of the 2016 election. Fountain will appear at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.

Normal is Boring

In Kerri Maniscalco’s Escaping from Houdini, magic and mayhem abound as teenager and forensic scientist Audrey Rose Wadsworth investigates a series of grisly murders onboard an ocean liner filled with carnival performers. Maniscalco will appear at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Vanderbilt on September 22, at Union Ave. Books in Knoxville on September 24, and at the 2018 Southern Festival of Books, held in Nashville October 12-14.
