In An Unseen Light: Black Struggles for Freedom in Memphis, Tennessee, a collection of scholarly essays, editors Aram Goudsouzian and Charles W. McKinney Jr. look at the Bluff City from emancipation through the turbulent 1960s and into the present. They will discuss An Unseen Light at two Memphis events: at the National Civil Rights Museum on April 17 and Novel on May 15.

Starting from an actual 1967 forum featuring South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond, Martin Luther King Jr., activist Stokely Carmichael, and beat poet Allen Ginsburg, Gerald Duff’s Nashville Burning looks at three consecutive Aprils of violence and change at Vanderbilt and other parts of the Music City.

The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore, an account of Jared Yates Sexton’s year on the 2016 campaign trail, describes Donald Trump’s rise to power and Hillary Clinton’s unexpected crash. Sexton will appear at the 2017 Southern Festival of Books in Nashville October 13-15.
